Kidney and urinary tract problems can sometimes interfere with the natural flow of urine. In such cases, a DJ stent(Double J stent) plays a vital role in restoring proper drainage and preventing complications.
In this blog, Dr. S K Palash, Consultant Urologist & Andrologist in Baner, Pune, explains what a DJ stent is, when it’s needed, how it’s placed, and what to expect during recovery.
What is a DJ Stent?
A DJ stent (short for Double J stent) is a thin, soft, and flexible tube inserted into the ureter—the duct that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. The stent is called “Double J” because both ends of the tube are curled, resembling the letter “J”, to keep the stent in place inside the kidney and bladder.
The primary function of a DJ stent is to maintain a steady flow of urine when the natural passage is blocked or healing after surgery.
Why is a DJ Stent Needed?
DJ stents are commonly used in urological practice and serve several purposes. Dr. S K Palash recommends stent placement in the following situations:
1. Kidney Stones
DJ stents help drain urine effectively before or after procedures like:
RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery)
PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy)
URSL (Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy)
Stents also relieve pressure caused by stones blocking urine flow.
2. Ureteric Blockage
Conditions like swelling, strictures (narrowing of the ureter), or tumors can obstruct urine flow. A DJ stent keeps the ureter open and allows urine to pass smoothly.
3. After Urological Surgery
After surgeries involving the ureter, stents support healing and ensure there is no urine buildup, which could delay recovery.
4. To Prevent Complications
In cases of severe urinary infection or swelling, a DJ stent helps prevent obstruction-related complications.
How is the DJ Stent Placed?
Stent placement is a minimally invasive procedure performed using cystoscopy, a camera-guided tool that goes through the urethra (urine passage) into the bladder.
It is done under local, spinal, or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s condition.
The procedure typically takes about 10 to 30 minutes.
Most patients go home the same day or after a short hospital stay.
How Long Will the DJ Stent Stay?
A DJ stent is not meant to stay in the body permanently. In most cases, it is removed within 2 to 6 weeks, depending on why it was placed.
Important: If a stent is left inside for too long, it can cause infection, stone formation, or other complications. Always follow your urologist’s timeline for stent removal.
How is the DJ Stent Removed?
Stent removal is a quick outpatient procedure done with the help of a cystoscope—the same instrument used for placement.
It is done in the OPD (Outpatient Department)
Takes only a few minutes
Usually does not require major anesthesia
Patients can go home shortly after and resume normal activities with minimal downtime.
Precautions and Aftercare
While a DJ stent is in place, some patients may experience mild discomfort, urgency, or burning while urinating. These are usually temporary. To ensure a smooth recovery:
Drink plenty of water to help flush the urinary system.
Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity unless cleared by your doctor.
Report any fever, severe pain, or unusual symptoms to your urologist immediately.
